If you’re searching for Medel Adhear compatible headbands, you’ve come to the right place! In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the Medel Adhear (or MED-EL ADHEAR) hearing system and the different ways in which it can be worn, including on a BAHA headband.
What Is the Medel Adhear Hearing Aid?
A Medel Adhear hearing aid system is a type of bone anchored hearing aid device (or BAHA for short). Like other bone anchored hearing aids, the Medel Adhear works by transmitting vibrations through the mastoid bone in your skull (the large bone behind your ear). From there, it sends them directly to your inner ear where they can be converted into sound.
This means, that as with other BAHAs, a Medel Adhear can be particularly useful for people who are deaf as a result of problems with the outer ear, for example, people living with conditions like Microtia or chronic ear infections, that would make a traditional hearing aid unusable or unsuitable. By bypassing the outer ear and ear canal, a bone anchored hearing aid such as a Medel Adhear improves hearing for people who can’t wear standard hearing aids that sit inside the ear.
The Medel Adhear system is made up of two parts – an adhesive adapter (sticky pad) that can be affixed to the skin behind the ear and an audio processor that clips onto the adapter.
Wearing a Medel Adhear on a Headband
Your Medel Adhear can also be worn on a headband rather than on the adhesive adapter. Some people find that they have allergies or a skin sensitivity to the adhesive used on the adapter, which makes a headband a preferable option for most or some of the time. Other people might want a little added security for their hearing aid when taking part in energetic activities such as sports, whereas others simply like having the option of being able to wear their Medel Adhear in multiple ways, using the adhesive pad sometimes and wearing their hearing aid on a headband (or softband) at other times.
Types of BAHA Headbands That Are Compatible With the Medel Adhear
All of our BAHA headbands are compatible with the Medel Adhear hearing aid. This includes both our standard BAHA headbands and our new wide headband range. To learn more about the differences and similarities between the two different headband styles, check out our recent blog.
All of our headbands are fully-adjustable, come in a range of sizes from babies through to adults and are fitted with a non-slip silicone strip that helps them to stay in place. Our headbands also come with a built-in safety line anchor as standard.
To wear your Medel Adhear on a headband, you will need to make a one-off purchase of a block button connector. This is what enables your Adhear processor to be attached to the headband, and this can then be positioned however works best for you. The block button connector can then be used with any of our BAHA headbands allowing you to switch between headbands whenever you like. You can learn more about the block button connector here.
