If you’re new to the world of bone anchored hearing aids, you’ll probably have lots of questions and you may be wondering whether or not you or your child can use one of our headbands with the Cochlear BAHA system.
This blog will answer the question “Can our BAHA headbands be used with Cochlear BAHA?” and will also take a closer look at what you need to know about choosing the right headband for your hearing device.
What Is the Cochlear BAHA System?
A BAHA (bone-anchored hearing aid) provides a hearing loss solution for those who have problems with the outer or middle ear, by bypassing these and transmitting sound directly into your inner ear instead. This makes it an ideal alternative for people with conditions affecting the outer ear such as Microtia, or for people living with one-sided deafness or hearing loss as a result of recurrent ear infections.
There are many different brands of BAHA systems, and one of the most popular is Cochlear BAHA. As with other types of bone conduction hearing systems, the Cochlear BAHA system works using an external processor, which transmits vibrations through the large bones in the skull to the cochlear where they can be converted to sound.
As with other types of BAHA, you can have an implant surgically fitted or you can wear the Cochlear BAHA processor on an external headband (also sometimes called a softband or a BAHA Start.)
Wearing your Cochlear BAHA on a headband allows you to try it out before committing to surgery. It also allows babies and very young children to experience hearing through their BAHA until they’re old enough to undergo the operation required to fit a BAHA implant.
Some children and adults may not want to have the implant fitted or it might not be suitable for their personal circumstances, in which case they may choose to wear their Cochlear BAHA on a headband permanently.
Choosing the Right Headband For Your BAHA
Our BAHA Accessories headbands can be used with all the major brands of bone anchored hearing aids, including Cochlear BAHA, Oticon Ponto, and Medel Adhear.
Our headbands can also be used with the BHM Contact Mini system but in this case you will require the connector plates from the manufacturer’s headband. To find out more, please visit our blog where you can read all about How to Fit a BHM Compact Mini Headband.
Our BAHA headbands are also fully adjustable, meaning they will fit any head size, right from newborn babies to fully-grown adults. To connect your Cochlear BAHA processor to your headband, you’ll need to make a one-off purchase of a button connector. This connector can then be used interchangeably with any of our headbands and will allow you to attach your Cochlear BAHA processor securely to the headband.
