BAHA Headband Safety For Children

If you’ve been told that your child could benefit from wearing a bone anchored hearing aid, you may be thinking about BAHA headband safety too. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at BAHA safety and answer the question, “Are BAHA headbands safe?”

Who Can Wear a BAHA Headband?

BAHA headbands are suitable for any age, from babies and young children through to teenagers and adults. People of all ages wear BAHA headbands on either a temporary or permanent basis. That’s why all our BAHA headbands are size-adjustable to fit any head, from newborns to fully grown adults.

Even those people who intend to have a BAHA implant surgically fitted eventually, will usually trial the device on a BAHA headband (or softband) first to make sure that the technology works for them and to help them get used to the device. BAHA headbands are also used when a baby or child is too young to undergo the surgery to improve their hearing while they wait for the operation.

BAHA Headband Safety For Babies and Children

Whilst BAHA headbands are suitable for any age, it is important to remember that the actual BAHA sound processor is a medical device and although babies and young children may be tempted to play with their processor, it isn’t a toy.

BAHA sound processors contain small parts that may be a choking hazard for babies and small children, so they should always be supervised when wearing their BAHA and discouraged from removing the processor from the band.

Keeping Your BAHA Safe

A BAHA safety line is a way of keeping your hearing device safe and secure. Safety lines are attached to the processor, which can then in turn be connected to something else like the collar of your clothes, to prevent the processor from falling off.

This can stop your BAHA processor from getting lost or damaged and is particularly useful if you’re doing something where your BAHA could get knocked or come loose, such as playing sport. It’s also a good solution for keeping your child’s BAHA safe during playtime, especially if you have an energetic toddler who is always on the go!

Some people prefer not to use a safety line as they find it gets in the way, and young children or babies may become distracted by it or find it too tempting to pull on, in which case some parents may decide not to use one until their child is old enough to understand what it is.

However, for many people, a safety line protects their hearing aid and gives them peace of mind as they go about their usual everyday activities. All our BAHA Accessories full headbands come with a safety line anchor as standard.
