What Does a BAHA headband do?
A BAHA headband offers an alternative way to wear a bone anchored hearing aid that doesn’t involve having an operation This makes it ideal for babies and young children who aren’t yet old enough to have a BAHA implanted surgically or for anyone else who can’t have – or doesn’t want to have – the surgery.
With a BAHA headband, a bone-anchored hearing aid is instead attached to an external headband in order to improve hearing. The BAHA processor is designed to be worn on the mastoid bone, which is the large bone behind the ear, however, it will also work when worn on other parts of the head, for example, with the processor sitting on the forehead or just in front of the ear instead. The processor vibrates in response to sound and those vibrations can then be transmitted through the skull bones to the cochlea where they’re converted to sound.
BAHA headbands have to be fitted snugly enough that they will hold the processor securely in place, otherwise it won’t be effective but they also need to be comfortable to wear.
Who wears a BAHA headband?
A BAHA headband is an alternative to traditional hearing aids, which need to be worn on the ear and transmit sound via the ear canal. Using bone conduction technology instead means that a BAHA can be worn by those living with Microtia, who have little to no outer ear and other conditions which affect the development of the outer ear and ear canal. BAHA headbands come in wide a range of sizes, colours and designs and are worn by babies, children and adults of all ages across the globe to help with hearing loss.
What’s the Difference between a DIY Headband and a Full Headband?
At BAHA Accessories, we offer two different types of BAHA headbands – a DIY headband and a full headband.
DIY Headband
A DIY headband uses the original button connector from the manufacturer, i.e. the one that is already on the standard headband provided by your hospital or audiologist. We have a handy tutorial over on our blog explaining how to use a DIY headband.
Full Headband
Our most popular type of headband is a full headband, with both single and bilateral headbands available. This type of BAHA headband requires a one-time purchase of a button connector, which is used to attach your bone anchored hearing aid to the headband. The button connector can also then be transferred easily between any of our headbands. You can read more about the button connector and the important story of the boy behind it here.
